Gel Groups

Maybe you've heard the saying that Christianity isn't about religion – it's about relationships.

We couldn't agree more. And that's why it's a bit ironic that our Sunday morning worship and celebration spot (a darkened theater) isn't always conducive for making tons of friends. Sure, we get together in the lobby before and after the service. We might chat a bit between songs. And some of us even meet later for lunch.

But the fact is that there's no overabundance of face-time on Sunday mornings. So that's where Velocity's Gel Groups come in. They're folks like you and me (about 6 – 12) who meet in each other's homes each weekto build community, discussat a deeper level what it means to be a Christ-follower, pray for each otherand apply Sunday's messages.

Each Gel Group tends to have a personality of its own. Some share a meal, snacks or a dessert before, during or after the weekly study. Other Group members stick around and watch TV together after the final amen. But in any event, it's easy to see how Gel Groups are a great way for not-so-perfect strangers to quickly make lasting friendships.

And one last thing… Don't worry about being locked into the same group forever. By design, our Gel Groups re-form several times a year so you're always meeting new people. After all, Velocity is about building relationships… not cliques!

Serving Opportunities at VelocityBelow is the spectrum of serving opportunities at Velocity. If you are interested in serving, email us what you're interested in and a ministry leader will get back to you.WORSHIP MINISTRYTrailer Puller (1) - If you have a truck with a hitch you can serve the Worship Ministry! Join a team that pulls the worship trailer from the Ministry Center to the Theater by 7:30 AM on Sundays. Usually you'll join the setup crew as well. (Rotation: 2 weeks ON, 4 Weeks Off)Setup Team (2) - Join the crew that sets up the stage, sound, lights, and signs each Sunday morning at Velocity. Arrive by 7:30 AM and finish by 9 AM. (Rotation: 2 weeks ON, 4 Weeks Off)Media Team (1) - Join the crew that runs the media software that drives the Worship service each Sunday at Velocity. Requires training on specialized software and orientation in the Mac environment. (Rotation: 2 weeks ON, 4 Weeks Off)Sound Technician (1) - Join the team of servants who mix the sound during the worship services each Sunday at Velocity. Requires training and apprenticeship on the equipment. (Rotation: 2 weeks ON, 4 Weeks Off)Signs (2) - Our Road-Side signs bring us more guests than anything else! Put them out after 5:30 PM on Fridays and collect them after dark on Sundays. (Rotation: Month ON, Month Off)PRAYER TEAMPrayer Team Coordinator (1) - Help maximize the effectiveness of Velocity's Prayer Team. Coordinate with the staff for church-related prayer needs. Schedule special prayer gatherings for the Team. Create special opportunities periodically for church-wide prayer emphasis.MINISTRY CONNECTIONSPastoral Care Givers (3) - Provide care for those who have been ill or bereaved or other pastoral needs. May include making time for personal visits, making follow up phone calls, praying with people for their needs and their encouragement or comfort.Visitor & Guest Connections (3) - Help our church grow by connecting with our visitors in creative ways. May include follow up phone calls (for those who request it), email greetings, hand-written notes, social lunches after Sunday services, etc. May also include the strategic analysis of the system and methods we use to connect with our guests to become the most effective at it. (Frequency: A brief monthly meeting with staff for the update on previous month's visitors and progress with their connections)New Believer Mentors (4) - Velocity is beginning a new program to have every new believer mentored by another member through a 12-week, one hour per week, Basic Christian Beliefs curriculum. (Frequency: Mentor 1-3 new believers per year)Veloci-Vision Assistants (2) - Help with the preparation, set up, execution and clean up of our regular Veloci-Vision Seminars to help move people toward membership and involvement at Velocity. May include inviting prospective attendees, purchasing and prepping the meal, etc. (Frequency: 3 times per year)Follow Up Membership Appointments (2) - Assist with scheduling Veloci-Vision attendees for their Follow Up Appointments and work with them to have their questions answered about faith and our church. (Frequency: 3 times per year)CHILDREN'S MINISTRYPreschool Teacher (1) - Experience the wonderful opportunity to teach our youngest attenders to love God and that He loves them! Use curriculum selected and provided by the Children's Ministry staff. Requires application, orientation and screening. Arrive at 9 AM each Sunday. (Rotation: 2 weeks ON, 4 Weeks Off)Preschool Helper (1) - Assist the Preschool Teacher. Have fun, Love the kids, don't lose any of them. Requires application, orientation and screening. Teenagers are also welcome to apply for this position. Arrive at 9 AM each Sunday. (Rotation: 2 weeks ON, 4 Weeks Off)Pre-K Coordinator (1) - Work with the Children's Ministry Staff to coordinate the three rotations of servants who teach and love our Pre-K kids. May also include helping to plan and execute volunteer training and appreciation events. Elementary Coordinator (1) - Work with the Children's Ministry Staff to coordinate the three rotations of servants who teach and love our Elementary kids. May also include helping to plan and execute volunteer training and appreciation events. Trailer Puller (1) - If you have a truck with a hitch you can serve this ministry! (Rotation: 2 weeks ON, 4 Weeks Off)YOUTH MINISTRY TEAMOutreach/Missions Coordinator (1) - Work with the Youth Ministry Staff to plan and coordinate outreach events and mission trips for Velocity's Youth. Middle School Youth Sponsor (1) - Volunteer two Sunday nights each month to work with Middle School teens during their regular Gel Group meetings. Might also include participating in other regular youth events. Requires screening and approval from Velocity Staff. GEL GROUP MINISTRY TEAMGroups Administrative Assistant (1) - Assist the Gel Group Team Leader organizing and confirming all the details for printing the catalog of Gel Groups each session. (Rotation: 3 - 6 Week Sessions/Yr)Gel Coach Apprentice (1) - Train to be a Supporter of 3-5 Gel Group Leaders providing feedback, communication and logistical support between the Gel Group staff and the Gel Leaders. (Rotation: 2 - 10 Week Sessions/Yr)Gel Group Curriculum Asst. (1) - Learn and Assist with the development of Gel Group Curriculum during sessions when we create our own custom Discussion Sheets for our leaders. May also include assisting leaders select elective curriculum material and proof reading curriculum drafts for accuracy.FINANCIAL TEAMContributions (4) - Join the team that collects, counts and records the weekly contributions for the accounting team. (Rotation: Month ON, Month Off)Accounting (1) - Help keep our financial records in order using standard accounting procedures. May include posting of contributions, managing credit card statements, and other monthly financial tasks. TECHNOLOGY TEAMSearch Engine Optimization (2) - Strategize and manage methods to optimize Google and other web searches as one of the primary marketing tools for those in our community looking for a church home.FaceBook Administrator (2) - Work to keep Velocity's FaceBook Page fresh and relevant as a connection point for those in our virtual sphere of influence. This may include creative use of Status Updates, Videos, Surveys, Invites, and other FB tools.Website (2) - Provide regular management of our website content so that it's always fresh and simple. This may include connection with ministry leaders and staff to ensure event calendars are accurate and other ways to keep it maximize this "Screen Door" to our Community.ADMINISTRATIVE TEAMDatabase (1) - Learn our specialized Church Management Software and help with data entry and reports, and help to keep membership records accurate over time.Facilities (2) - Help maintain our Ministry Center with basic handyman needs as they arrive. May include simple electrical or plumbing, occasional painting, wiring, etc. Also includes maintaining our trailers as they wear.EVENTS TEAMPicnics (4) - Help with the planning, set up, execution and clean up of our regular Church Picnics. (Frequency: 2-3 times per year)Great Day of Service Team (6) - Help with the planning, set up, execution and clean up of our regular Great Days of Service, especially all the details for the actual day of the event. May also include coordination with contact people from the community projects and gathering of materials needed for individual projects. (Frequency: 2-3 times per year)Velocity Academy (2) - Help with the set up and clean up of our regular Velocity Academy Seminars. (Frequency: 3 - 4 Week Sessions per year)MEN'S/ WOMEN'S/ MARRIAGE TEAMMarriage Ministry Mentor Couple (2) - Work with other couples from Velocity who are looking to improve the foundation of their marriage with practical, godly principles. Would involve mentoring 1-2 couples per year using the "Prepare & Enrich" curriculum.Men's Ministry Team Member (3) - Help accelerate men's faith journeys! Work on a team that promotes fellowship, discipleship and service opportunities especially for the men of Velocity.Women's Ministry Team Member (1) - Help accelerate women's faith journeys! Work on a team that promotes fellowship, discipleship and service opportunities especially for the women of Velocity.

At Velocity, we believe that teaching and loving kids is an important responsibility. And we enjoy doing it!That's why we've created an atmosphere where everyone can accelerate towards God. So what does that mean for your kids? Our“pit crew” of volunteers servesevery child who comes to church on Sunday morning:

Velocity Kids Nursery (0 - 2 years)

A safe and caring place. Among the diaper changes and playtime, we introduce God's Word in story and rhyme.

Velocity Kids Toddlers (2's - 3's)

These formative years are a great time to share more Biblical ideas about God's love.Their Sunday mornings are full of action!

Velocity Kids Preschool (4's - 5's)

It's great to start school-type activities with this age group. They're ready to learn more about God and how to love others.

Velocity Kids Early Elementary (K - 2nd Grade)

This classroom time is for the younger elementary age kids. Study is full of action and everyone joins in the lesson.

Velocity Kids Upper Elementary (3rd - 5th Grade)

These kids need a solid Biblical foundation to guide them as they encounter a bigger world. This class is a crazy time of games, dramas, experiments and interactive fun to help them investigate God's truths.

And safety is very important to us. That's why we run background checks on every Velocity Kids volunteer. And there are always multiple teachers in each class. The bottom line is that we always want you to feel confident that your child is in good hands!

Events: Quarterly trips to cool places. The whole group gets out and gets crazy! Past events : Laser Tag, Wrestling School (yah, you read it right!) Rock Climbing and mission trip to Mexico.

Conventions: Middle Schoolers and High Schoolers attend Convention X in November. The conventions hosts students from all over VA. Christian rock bands, entertainers, and speakers get everyone refueled and charged-up for God! www.smov.net.

Camps: Velocity Youth are connected with a great summer camp, Camp Rudolph in Yale, VA. There are different weeks designed for middle school and high school. Also, teens can choose wilderness camping which includes tents, hiking, canoeing, and survival training. For more information you can visit www.camprudolph.org.

Velocity Men

Call it Guy Rule #1: Sometimes guys just need to be with other guys to do guy things. And at Velocity, that’s part of our special mission to help men accelerate their faith journey toward God. We focus on three domains to help make it all happen:

SERVICE: Serve wholeheartedly, as if you were serving the Lord (Ephesians 6:7).

Whether it's serving a single mom through our ministry partner Fresh Start for Single Moms or organizing a fellowship event to help out in the community, Velocity Men are men of action and service.

FELLOWSHIP: As iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another (Proverbs 27:17).

Daily demands, an increasing transient society and a lack of role models create a situation where men have become more solitary. The result is a lack of the foundational male relationships that are so critical to spiritual development. Velocity Men addresses this through memorable guy’s-only events like Hockey Night, the All-Star Baseball Home Run Derby and Chili Cook-Off, and special out-of-town retreats like the Men’s Acceleration Weekend .

SPIRITUAL GROWTH: I guide you in the way of wisdom and lead you along straight paths (Proverbs 4:11).

Testimonies Fresh Start Shady Grove Fall 2009When I came to the Fresh Start I felt alone-me against the world. I was broken and discouraged. I was tired and couldnt stand my kids. The first night of Fresh Start I felt like I was walking into a room of love and encouragement. The food was incredible. My kids were swept into their rooms and taken care of. As the weeks went on my kids ran to their rooms. I made friends I will keep for the rest of my life. The speakers were encouraging and practical. The encouragers were amazing! This program changed my life! Thank you for all you do. -ELI was hesitant about coming here. I am not one to look for group support, but I heard positive things about the first meeting form my friend so I tried it. Right from the first meeting I flet so much warmth and love and really connected to everyone. The best thing that came out of this for me is learning that I dont need a man to support me. I have entered the VIDA program and am determined to save to buy my very own first home. YAY! I can do it!Before Fresh Start I felt like a failure and a loser.It was so amazing to see other smart, funny intelligent woman going through the same thing.This program gives single mothers (or separated mom) a huge encouragement and supports them in sharing and caring for each other. For me, this is the place that I wanted to come no matter how the day goes crazy, how bad the weather, how much fear. When I arrived here, I feel warm, secure and important. Because of this program I could move forward and decide what I am supposed to do. It is so helpful to see that I am not alone, and the Christian element is so vitally important too.
